We’re thrilled to announce that PCI Proxy now supports the multi-token framework for Apple Pay, a feature designed to simplify multi-merchant payment transactions.
At its core, multi-token support means you can split a single Apple Pay transaction into different parts, each going to a different merchant. It’s a little like 3D Requestor Initiated (3RI) Authentications from EMV3DS 2.1, which helps make multi-merchant payments smoother from a 3DS perspective.
Here’s how it works: each merchant involved in the transaction gets their own authentication credentials. This means that each business gets the exact info they need to process their part of the payment - and nothing more. This keeps everything transparent, reduces the risk of data exposure, and makes the whole process more secure.
If you're not too familiar with 3RI or multi-merchant payments yet, let’s explore a scenario that vividly illustrates the magic of multi-token payments in action.
Picture Emma, ready to book her dream vacation. She heads to a travel agency’s website, where everything she needs is at her fingertips—flight tickets, a cozy hotel, and a reliable car rental. The total cost for her adventure? €900.
Now, here’s what you might expect: the travel agency charges Emma’s card €900, takes care of splitting the funds behind the scenes, and pays each merchant. But here’s the catch. In most cases, the travel agency passes Emma’s payment details along to the airline, hotel, and car rental company so they can each charge her directly. This approach not only exposes Emma’s personal information to multiple parties but also increases the risk of mishandling her data, being charged a different amount than initially agreed upon during checkout, or facing an issuer decline due to missing 3DS authentication proof.
Now, with multi-token support for Apple Pay, the travel agency can take a completely different approach. Instead of sharing the same personal information of Emma across multiple merchants, the travel agency can request individual 3DS authentication details for a specific amount and merchant involved in the same transaction. These authentication details alongside the device primary account number (DPAN), allowing the airline, hotel, and car rental company to charge Emma for their respective portions of the total.
What’s in it for Emma? A seamless booking experience with her personal information staying safe and secure. No extra risk, no surprises, just a quick, easy, and privacy-first way to pay. Plus, she can see and verify each part of the transaction directly in her Apple Wallet, bringing a whole new level of transparency and control.
With multi-token support for Apple Pay, PCI Proxy empowers businesses to streamline secure multi-merchant payments. Whether you’re running an e-commerce site, simplifying travel bookings, or managing ticketing services, this feature helps create smoother, more secure payment experiences.
